Can Pingbacks Improve Your SEO?
Whether you are a new website owner or you have had a website for years, you know that search engine optimisation (SEO) is essential if you want your site to get a high rank on Google and other search engines. You probably also know that high-quality backlinks play a big role in SEO.
At Localnode, we want our clients to rank as high as possible – but we also believe it is our responsibility to warn against the use of ineffective or “black hat” SEO tactics. Google will take everything into consideration, which is why you need a reliable hosting company with a superior network.
You can use pingbacks to build backlinks quickly – but are they helpful for SEO? Here’s what you need to know.
What Are Pingbacks?
A pingback is a notification that a WordPress website owner receives notifying them that a website has linked to their content. If you have a blog and pingbacks are enabled, you will receive a pingback that looks like a blog comment letting you know about the link.
Tracking pingbacks can be useful if you want to understand who is mentioning your brand or linking to your content. They may also be a good way to get new visitors to come to your website. That said – there are downsides to them as well.
Is There a Downside to Pingbacks?
If your website is new, then you may imagine that any backlink is a good backlink. While that is an understandable thought, it is also not an accurate one. There is a potential downside to pingbacks.
To illustrate the point, let’s use some examples. An example of a helpful pingback would be if a highly trusted site in your industry or area of interest linked back to your site. The backlink itself confers some of the trust of the other site on your site. If a small tech site got a pingback from Microsoft, it could potentially give them a huge boost of recognition and authority.
On the other hand, a pingback from a site that is filled with spam or simply not authoritative can be harmful. For example, if that same small tech site got a pingback from a gossipy celebrity site with lots of spam comments, it could have the reverse effect and negatively affect its rank.
Are Pingbacks Good for SEO?
You may have guessed by now that the answer to whether pingbacks are good for SEO is a qualified yes. If the pingbacks are coming from authority sites with high rankings from Google, then they are most likely going to help your SEO and improve your rank.
The reverse is likewise true. If a low quality, untrustworthy site pings back to your blog, it is likely to do more harm than good. It is a form of guilt by association and it is something you should approach with wariness.
Tips for Managing Pingbacks
Should you monitor pingbacks? If you do, what are some tips for managing them effectively? Here are some suggestions.
- Enable pingbacks by going to Manage -> Settings -> Discussion and toggling on the option that says, “Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks).”
- Turn on comment monitoring, so you can review each pingback before posting it on your blog.
- Review each link to see if it comes from a quality site. You can either approve the pingback as a comment or delete it. We suggest leaving it as a comment only if you believe the link itself is useful to your readers.
- When you find a spam link, email the webmaster of the site to have the link removed.
- At the same time, submit a disavow file to Google. This step will ensure that Google does not include spam backlinks when it crawls and ranks your site.
If you get many pingbacks and find it difficult to monitor them manually, you may choose to disable them. Instead of monitoring individually, you may use a backlink monitoring tool to identify spam links and take care of them. Make sure to check regularly to avoid problems.
The bottom line is that if you want to monitor your backlinks on WordPress, pingbacks can be a useful tool to evaluate links and get rid of spam links quickly.
