How to Improve Blog Posts So They Turn Readers into Action Takers

You want people to read your blog posts. That goes without saying. Your content must be compelling, and you must have a reliable blog hosting company to make it easy for people to find what you write.

Reading is only part of your goal, though. More importantly, you want them to take action. That might mean having them click through to a product page, sign up for your list, or set up a consultation to learn more about your services.

Even if all the technical pieces are in place, including first-class hosting, superior hardware, and superior software, you need your blog posts to be persuasive. Here are some things that can help.


Focus on Providing Value to Your Readers


Have you heard of something called reciprocity? It’s what psychologists call a cognitive bias – sort of a mental glitch that we all have. When someone gives us something, we’re hard-wired to want to return the favour.

In your blog posts, focus on giving your readers valuable and actionable information they can use. If they feel they’ve received something from you, they’re far more likely to give something (namely, their business!) to you in return.


Bring Qualified Leads to Your Posts with the Right Keywords


It’s simply not possible to overstate the importance of keyword research. Using the right keywords will help you attract qualified leads to your site – the kind of readers who are ready to buy your product or hire you to provide services.

The secret is focusing on:

  • Long-tail keywords
  • Keywords that include “purchase-ready” words like buy, purchase, compare, best, or top
  • Local keywords that include your location
  • Questions and voice search keywords

Let’s look at a simple example. Say you own a shop in San Diego that sells camping gear. You could try to rank for “camping gear”, but it means you’ll be up against retail giants like REI and LL Bean. Or, you could focus on the kinds of keywords we’ve mentioned above:

  • Desert camping gear
  • Buy family camping gear
  • San Diego camping gear store
  • Where can I buy camping gear in San Diego?

You get the idea. These keywords are more likely to attract people who are actively in the market for what you sell. You’ll still probably attract some casual readers, but you’ll get a higher conversion rate than you would if you focused on shorter, less-specific keywords.

It’s also a good idea to use your keywords as part of a catchy headline that will grab readers’ attention immediately.


Use Multiple Calls to Action


You probably already end each blog post you write with a call to action. A good way to improve your conversion rate is to review your existing CTAs and do what you can to make them highly persuasive.

Each CTA should prompt readers to take a specific action and link them to a page where they can do it. If you’re writing a post about your top product, link the readers to the sales page for that product at the end of the post.

You may also want to consider including a CTA near the top of your post. Some people, like Neil Patel, recommend including a CTA in the top bar of your blog page. Other options include:

  • Adding a slide-in CTA at the midway point of your blog post (just make sure it doesn’t interrupt the reader’s view of the post itself)
  • Add a light box pop-up
  • Put a CTA box at the bottom of your post (for example, this is a great place to include your basic opt-in form)

Create a Lead Magnet

The benefit of adding a lead magnet is that it helps you weed out casual readers and focus on qualified leads. Someone who’s interested enough to click on the lead magnet and give you their email address is more likely to buy from you than someone who simply skims your post and navigates away.

Don’t Try to Sell


You’ve probably had the experience of walking into a store and having an aggressive salesperson descend on you like a one-person plague of locusts. Very few people enjoy the feeling of being pressured into a sale.

While of course, you want to sell, you can do a better job of convincing people to buy from you if you focus on providing them with reasons to buy from you instead of a hard sales pitch. If readers view you as an authority, they’ll trust your products or services and want to know more about them.


Focus on the User Experience


The final thing you should do is make sure that the user experience on your site is the best it can be. That means using a superior network and optimising your page’s loading time.

You should also focus on building a network of internal links to help people learn more about your products and services. Linking to product or service pages, resources, and previous blog posts is a good way to accomplish that goal.
