Our Backups Explained

We've changed the way we backup your data since our last post.

Any kind of computer system must have provisions for backups in order to secure data. Backups are very useful for recovering and saving important data in case of server issues. At Localnode, we take backups seriously and we have deployed state of the art technology to take backups of client data.

How are we different from others?

It is a common practice among web hosting service providers to offer RAID (redundant array of independent disks) for server backups. RAID technology uses combination of physical storage units to form a single logical unit. This exposes it to catastrophic events and in case of fatal situations data gets lost completely.

Our team has weighed in different options and created the right combination in terms of technology to provide superior data backup solutions. There are broadly two types of backups taken at Localnode:
  • Off-site backup
  • On-site backup

Off-site backup:

This type of backup storage is done to secure important data via internet. It has the following distinct advantages:
  • Backup files and applications can be accessed remotely via internet or FTP
  • Data can also be shared among multiple number of remote areas
  • In case of a catastrophic event in the business premises, the data would still be secure

We use the following two widely accepted, most popular and secure data backup solutions:
  • R1Soft
  • Amazon S3

R1Soft:

R1Soft is a pioneer in Continuous Data Protection technology. This technology initially takes full backup of your data and then it continuously monitors any kind of changes to your data. This helps in backing up only the changed files and configurations.
Because of this technology your server resources are not consumed by performance intensive full backups and the system operations are used to serve your clients.
Another feature called multi-tenancy gives ability to set different level of privileges according to users roles.
Flexible data recovery option lets you browse through different files and choose specific files or directories for recovery.
Site-to-site replication feature can be used in case of disaster to recover files, server configuration, and archived data along with multi-tenant account structure.

Apart from the previous features mentioned R1Soft comes with plethora of other features like block-Level backups, disk safe replication, disk safe verification, quick restore, multi-platform Support, AES-256 encryption and self-service MySQL restoration.
All these make us really efficient and our productivity is increased while taking backups of data. In the end our clients reap the benefit and it helps us in our customer-centric approach.

We backup client data every 30 minutes via R1Soft and retain them for 1 week. The cPanel module is also installed for easily automating and managing server configuration.

Amazon S3:

The Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) provides reliable, durable, secure object storage that can scale tremendously as per business growth. By default Amazon stores data in different storage facilities and different machines in those facilities. Important thing to notice here is that durability of Amazon S3 is 99.999999999% and it has been designed to recover data even if there is concurrent loss of data in two facilities. To minimise the data uploaded via internet - Amazon only stores and compresses data that has changed. AWS security certifications like SOC1 can be used to remain compliant with data as per the industry standard. Security standards such as AES 256, lets us encrypt data with strong cipher suites and we can make sure that any data is secure.

Built-in cPanel is used to store backups. Backups are created every month and retained for 6 months. We also create yearly backups via Amazon S3. So the two oldest backups that customer can access are 1 year and 6 months old. This backup process runs at 4 AM AEST (Australian Eastern Standard Time).

On-site backup:

These types of backups use hard drives in the local area to store important data. Given below are some of the advantages of on-site backup: 
  • instantaneous access to data
  • no need of internet
  • less expensive
Localnode clients also enjoy the benefits of onsite backup, as we take backups every day and use a completely separate machine to add an extra layer of reliability. The data backups are retained for one day.

Apart from this we also keep an image of CentOS with CloudLinux and cPanel WHM. As images copy the whole OS along with deleted files, configurations and empty blocks, this makes new installation of a complete set-up a breeze. These images can also be used to scale the server capacity as per the business growth.


Conclusion

Data backups come in handy for protecting files, avoiding data loss, scaling server capacity and restoring server configuration, whenever changes made to the server are unsuccessful. Localnode uses both onsite and offsite storage to give our clients the best of both worlds when it comes to data security and recovery. Hence our clients can focus more on their business instead of worrying about their data backups.
